Capital Development drives the long-term estates strategy for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The team oversees the planning, design, and construction of new facilities, ensuring all building projects align with the Trust’s objectives. From modernising existing spaces to creating new healthcare environments, Capital Development ensures that the Trust’s estate supports the delivery of high-quality care both now and in the future.
Key Projects
Forget-Me-Not Garden at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital
The team was proud to support the opening of the Forget-Me-Not Garden at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, dedicated to families and loved ones affected by baby loss. Designed by our Grounds Manager, the garden offers a tranquil and reflective space where parents and families can find solace and peace. The garden was made possible by Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity.
Orthopaedic Theatres at Cheltenham General Hospital
This development marked the completion of Phase 5 in our Strategic Site Development programme. The theatres represent a significant leap forward in delivering exceptional healthcare services. These state-of-the-art facilities are designed to provide unparalleled care for patients requiring orthopaedic surgery, ensuring optimal outcomes and enhanced patient experiences.
Tower Block multi-million pound facelift
The team led the £10.9m transformation of the hospital’s 11-storey Tower Block. This project modernised the 1970s building with new two-toned façade panels and energy-efficient triple-glazed windows, giving it a sleek, contemporary look. Sustainability was key, with upgrades like a 200kW air source heat pump, improved roof insulation, and heating system enhancements.
Image Guided Interventional Surgery (IGIS)
The team has been instrumental in the construction of the new Image Guided Interventional Surgery (IGIS) Hub at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility will provide 24/7 services, including interventional radiology, vascular surgery, and cardiology, with a satellite hub at Cheltenham General Hospital. This project will improve patient care and reduce hospital stays.
Sustainability & Innovation
At GMS, sustainability is at the heart of our projects. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our estate and supporting the NHS’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2040.
We have a comprehensive Green Plan in place, developed in collaboration with Gloucestershire Managed Services and Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This plan outlines the actions we are taking to address climate change and protect the health of the people of Gloucestershire.
The Green Plan focuses on key areas such as adapting to climate change, promoting sustainable travel, enhancing green spaces, developing new models of healthcare, and making vital infrastructure improvements. These efforts reflect our dedication to creating a sustainable healthcare environment that benefits both our patients and the wider community.
