A significant upgrade to the Building Management System (BMS) is now under way at the Radiopharmacy facility at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH). The project will modernise key infrastructure by replacing clean room pressure gauges, ventilation controls and sensors, and addressing ventilation services that are currently operating on ageing controllers.

These improvements will provide better control, efficiency and reliability across the clean rooms, supporting Radiopharmacy in meeting the rigorous standards of Good Manufacturing Practice and the Quality Assurance of Aseptic Preparation Services.

The upgrade forms part of a multiyear Trust-wide investment in BMS improvements across both Gloucestershire and Cheltenham hospital sites. This programme aims to modernise essential systems to enhance safety, compliance and environmental performance.

Once complete, the upgraded system is expected to contribute to an estimated 540 tonne reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, supporting the NHS commitment to achieving net zero by 2040.

Kirsty Higgins, Radiopharmacy Manager, said:

“This upgrade is a really important step for Radiopharmacy. The improved control and reliability of the clean room environment will support our team in maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality for patients. We’re pleased to see this investment being made in our facilities and we look forward to the benefits it will bring both for our service and for the Trust’s sustainability goals.”

Mike Gregson, Managing Director of GMS, said:

“We are pleased to be supporting the Trust with this essential upgrade to the Radiopharmacy BMS. Ensuring stable and reliable environmental conditions in clean room areas is critical for patient safety, and this project will give the team improved confidence in the performance of their facilities. It also aligns with the wider programme of modernising infrastructure across the hospitals, which will deliver meaningful long-term benefits for energy efficiency and sustainability. I am proud of the Capital team and the high-quality projects they are delivering across the Trust.”
