Medical Engineering provides services that assist in the safe use and effective management of medical equipment.

The department also manages the electrical safety testing of portable non-medical appliances. This ensures the safety of staff, patients and visitors when using our appliances, along with those brought into our hospitals by patients.

Featured case study: Safer access to syringe pumps for palliative care

Syringe pumps are essential for delivering reliable symptom control for patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care. When pumps are unavailable or difficult to locate, this can delay pain relief and add pressure for clinical teams.

GMS Medical Engineering worked closely with specialist palliative care clinicians to redesign how syringe pumps were tracked and managed, ensuring a solution that was clinically safe, durable and suitable for everyday NHS use.

The project delivered a 100% reduction in lost syringe pumps, improved access to equipment when it was needed most, and helped clinicians focus on patient care rather than searching for devices. It also reduced replacement costs and created a model that can be applied to other critical medical equipment.
