Gloucestershire Royal Hospital has installed a brand-new generator to help keep the hospital running safely and smoothly—even during power cuts. This new equipment replaces a temporary generator that had been in use for over two years.

The new generator is part of the hospital’s wider plans to upgrade its electrical systems and ensure that essential services can continue without interruption, especially during emergencies or maintenance work.

Kevin McNamara, Chief Executive of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“This investment reflects our commitment to ensuring the resilience of our hospital infrastructure. The new generator not only strengthens our emergency power systems but also supports our long-term sustainability goals as we prepare for the next phase of electrical upgrades.”

The project was delivered by the GMS Capital team, working with NG Bailey, who were appointed to design, build, and install the new system. The generator is a 1-megawatt unit—powerful enough to support key hospital services—and has now been fully connected to the hospital’s backup power system.

Dr Mike Gregson, Managing Director of GMS Capital, commented:
“We’re proud to support the Trust in delivering this critical infrastructure upgrade. Our team is committed to ensuring the installation is seamless and fully integrated, helping GRH maintain the highest standards of operational resilience.”

The new generator plays a vital role in keeping the hospital running during power outages, ensuring that patient care and essential services are not disrupted. Once the wider electrical upgrade is complete, the generator could be reused at another hospital or sold, making it a cost-effective investment. It also supports the hospital’s growing energy needs as services continue to expand.

This upgrade is part of the Trust’s ongoing work to improve its infrastructure and provide safe, reliable care for patients across Gloucestershire.
